Minimalism began in the 1960’s to early 1970’s as a contrasting aesthetic compared to Abstract expressionism. The primary element of Minimalism is the reduction of features to achieve the most simple design or image. Minimalism is seen in many different mediums ranging from paintings to architecture to apparel. Some people even live their lives as a form of minimalism, focusing on having very few material items in order to focus on the true beauty of life itself. Minimalism, especially in architecture, has been strongly influenced by Japanese design, such as Zen gardens. Open space and light are major aspects of the Minimalist aesthetic. Notable Minimalist artists include Anne Truitt, Donald Judd, Frank Stella, and  Dan Flavin. Minimalism is related to Modernism in the sense that they both involve reduction of features in order to improve appearance.

  • YES- totally agree with Rena: to me, the beauty in minimalism is in the negative space. I’m especially a fan of big white walls and minimalist watch designs. The picture examples you chose are awesome!

  • I think minimalism is a beautiful form of art, and it certainly has a very memorable aesthetic. I think part of what makes minimalism so effective is how the empty space literally forces your vision to focus on the subject of the piece. In all of your examples, it’s very clear exactly what the viewer is supposed to be focusing on (unlike their abstract art counterpart). I would love to see examples from some of the artists you have posted about but these images selected from instagram are also very lovely!
