Mechanical Buffalo – Top 5 Constraints

  • 3D-printing only (DIY kit for Thingiverse)
  • No fasteners (all parts must align or lock together without fasteners)
  • Print Time (2-4 hours per prototype, so I can only cycle through a couple of iterations per day)
  • Material properties (must make design considerations based on one type of filament – eg: a snapfit feature designed for PLA may not work for ABS due to its brittleness)
  • Printer tolerances vs. Print bed surface area (need to be careful about designing parts with small features, but also can’t scale up the part so much that it doesn’t fit on most 3D-printer beds)

Oh wow these sound rough! I bet you are super happy you have your own 3D printer or else these constraints could be 10x worse considering how the waiting time to even get your part to the printer can be days. Overall though you seem to know exactly how long this will take and how these all factor into your overall design so you should be set!
