Design and Fabrication Timeline

Final Design

I developed a final design for the information display by proportioning the display window to fit two LCD displays. Additionally, I added another element to the side, which will light up in orange LED. This was done after receiving feedback to include more features to the previously more simple design. I really like how it looks now, so I can go ahead and proceed with manufacturing it.

I also decided to ditch 3D printing and laser cutting acrylic. Both the aforementioned processes will not give me the desired surface finish nor is it friendly to my wallet. Instead, I’ve decided to pursue an old school method of prop making where the basic shape is built up with cardstock paper and reinforced with resin and fiberglass followed by fiberglass filler and putty. This process takes much longer, but it is more satisfactory when it is completed.

I ordered all my parts last week, and my LCD displays and capacitive touch shield have just arrived. I’m still waiting for the orange LEDs — hopefully they will ship soon. In the mean time, I will start building the structure out of paper.

The total cost spent so far is $68, which is way below the initial estimates of $110.

The model looks very sleek. It is a shame that you don’t have access to some sort of casting method so you could create those sharp curves without the 3D printed material finish. I think you are executing the Borderlands aesthetic perfectly and am excited to see the final product!

Damn, you have an impressive timeline and your CAD looks sick. I wonder if you already have the final process done now. The change in material for aesthetic style is a good choice in the long run, since you will enjoy the final design once fabricated. Taking from Ashley’s comment, I would recommend two pieces so yo could possibly replace lens if something breaks.

I really like the orange you added! I also like the darker color better than the whitish one you had before. To me, it looks a whole lot more ‘Borderlands’ and a lot less ‘Portal’. In the rendering, it looks like the body might come apart at the dark line. Are you planning on making it one solid piece, or making it in two and sliding them together? If it’s in two pieces, how are you going to make sure you get the tolerance right between them?
