Pre Spring Break Progress

At this point I have all of my material purchased and sitting at my house. After taking a look at the amount of carbon fiber that I ordered, I realized I would need quite a lot more to create a decent carbon fiber coffee table. I personally wasn’t very invested in the coffee table idea and have decided to switch my project so that I don’t have to buy more (expensive) material.

For the final project, I am going to create a carbon fiber skateboard. I am much more excited about this idea and I have all the material already. I will buy the trucks and wheels and manufacture the deck.

For this project, my inspiration and aesthetic will change. I think I’ll be aiming for the aesthetic that carbon fiber intensive super cars have like the Pagani Zonda R or Koenigsegg 1:one present.

  • We too often get questions as to why we feel it necessary to talk about sex frequently. To those people we always answer, “Sex is always being talked about so we want to join the conversation with God’s Word as our guide rather than pop culture.” I believe many people appreciate those of us who are willing to talk openly about Godly sexuality. Even if they don’t understand it completely or would not freely do so themselves, we have been very encouraged by people who think what we are doing is important.Megan

I am curious to see how you form the carbon fiber into a deck like shape. Also I’m not sure if you considered it but but mounting hardware to carbon fiber can be quite tricky! I would definitely do some testing before using the majority of your carbon fiber.

  • Damn, how are you doing the layup? I’d make something with the contours you want, lay up a few layers at a time and let it cure under a weight. Sand and repeat. Then cut the final shape that you want, very slowly with the finest blade you can find. Refinish the edges with epoxy.

Also, look into some carbon/kevlar weaves. They can be more flexible and the kevlar can be pigmented, making a cool red and black or yellow and black grid.

The skateboard idea seems to make the most out of the materials you have available and sounds like something you are more passionate about. The pictures you posted above of carbon fiber super cars and the idea of a carbon frame skateboard made me think of the racing by fellow CU-Boulder student Garrett Creamer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cbPuRWCYoo). It may be fun to create something that sends the same message those cars do – speed!

Pretty edgy move, changing your project like this. However, I think this will be much more of a dynamic project, and with a carbon fiber skateboard you can get to class much faster than with a carbon fiber table. I hope you don’t get carbon fiber splinters. How are you going to make sure you get the right amount of flex in your board, and not make it too stiff?
