Pearl St. Progress 4/6

I have both made a lot of progress since my last blog post and made none at all.

The things I still need to do in the following couple of days, I wanted to get done this last weekend. I need to order acrylic from Colorado Plastics, but am unsure exactly how that process works. I need to buy my switches from the Electrical Engineering shop for three dollars each. I also need to purchase glue that will glue perf. boards to acrylic and some sort of acrylic glue. Then I need to set up a time to get my pieces laser cut at the CINC. This seems like a lot, but I believe I will be able to get it all done in a swift manner if I stay on track. They are a lot of little things that seem to add up.

I have finished the laser cut file on Rhino. This took longer than expected because there were small nuances preparing the file and making sure everything was perfect and solid with the right dimensions. This is a huge accomplishment for me though and I feel like I have one giant step accomplished.

Elyse, It sounds like you are on track to have this project done shortly. You could try to attach the perf board to the acrylic with bolts and some spacers and avoid any type of adhesive. The other option would be to try epoxy, as epoxy would definitely bond strong enough. The laser cut parts that you showed me in class looked great and I’m looking forward to seeing the final project.

In so far as getting your acrylic from Colorado Plastics, it should be fairly simple. I think you can just go there and get it on the spot, but wouldn’t hurt to call them to double check. For my project, I got my scrap acrylic from McGuckins at a really low price (only about $1 for a large piece of scrap), so this may even be a better idea for you. The scrap acrylic at McGuckins is right by the customer service desk. You could also check under the laser cutter for extra scrap for free. I am not sure what acrylic glue is good, but you could go talk to Kye in the basement of the ITLL because he has materials for virtually everything. The project depot will also have materials you can get now and for free. Good job getting familiarized with the laser cutter! Have you tried putting a paper towel down and cutting that before you cut your actual acrylic? THat is a great way to ensure that you have everything dimensioned properly without ruining your acrylic.
