Skill Sets & Personal Aspirations

As an engineering student I have the same general technical skills that most students do – where I separate myself from the pack is in outdoor skills. I am an accomplished skier – I raced in high school but transitioned into skiing park. Beyond skiing I enjoy riding dirtbikes; currently I ride a WR 250 which totally rips. My most quantifiable outdoor skills come with knowledge acquired in the mountains. I have been on multiple several week backpacking trips which has brought experience in various back country situations – be it storms or basic knowledge such as where to set up camp. To ensure my safety when I am outside I have undergone and completed training to be a Wilderness First Responder. I guess most of the skill sets that make me unique are purely recreational.

One skill that may be useful for the final project in this class is my ability to draw. I have always enjoyed art and think I am at least decently good at drawing most things.

My aspirations follow my skill set. After college I would like to be a guide for either NOLS or Outward Bound for a year or two. I feel like this would be a great experience and opportunity before entering a different career. Although I don’t have any set career goals yet, I would like to do something quantitative involving finance or I could see myself trading energy. Despite these possible plans, pursuing one of these careers is not my end goal.

My biggest goal and aspiration is to be a stay at home dad. It would be awesome. I would get really good at cooking and make delicious breakfasts, brunches, lunches, suppers, and dinners – but not dessert because ice cream is great. I would have time to climb, hike, ski, dirtbike, and read during the day. Also if I have kids I could spend time with them and maybe be the guiding figure they need to be a superstar skier or basketball player or whatever they want to be. I don’t know how I’ll get to be a stay at home dad but I have a few ideas: win the lottery, get a baller job and make a ton of money for a little while, marry into a really rich family, or find some kind of treasure.

Who knows where life will take me or what opportunities my skill sets will present. Wherever I end up, I think I can make the best of it since my aspirations are so varied and my skill sets will allow to go out and have fun no matter where I am or what I’m doing.

I hope that you can find a route that will lead you to be a stay at home dad! It is awesome that you spend so much time in the mountains and outdoors and really take advantage of our locations in the mountains. Hopefully you will be able to find a way to piece all of your technical, outdoor and financial interests together into something sweet!

  • I like that you know completely what you would like to do outside of college. It seems like you can use all of your skills to fulfill your aspirations. Awesome! And cool skiing pics.
