Main Project Inspirations: Upside Down Fish Tank

For my main project, I am thinking about doing an upside down fish tank. This fish tank is created by placing a fish tank upside down above the waterline. The air inside the tank will then be sucked out and water will rise into the tank. This allows the fishes in the tank to swim above the water line and provide amazing aesthetics.

To do this project, I will need to buy acrylic sheets and cut them using a laser cutter

The fish tank will then be manufactured accordingly keeping the upside down fish tank aesthetics in mind. I hope to be able to make more parts of the fish tank move than just the lid. This is where I need to brain storm more ideas. I guess the fish tank will have “moving parts” if I have a pump and aerator as well, but I would like for it to more some more. Another idea that I had was to be able to grow plants on top of the fish tanks as well. Please let me know if anyone has any input. Thank you!

Choosing the type of fish that will go into my fish tank is also a bonus aesthetics. Should I pay more for the colorful tropical fishes or pay less for semi colorful freshwater fishes?

Hey Jason, I would 100% choose fresh water tropical fish for this project. Salt water fish are really expensive and require much more care. I would recommend using mollies or plattys , which you can buy at pretty much any fish store. They are really hearty fish that come in a large variety of colors and they would look great in your inverted tank! Good Luck!

This is really cool! I’ve never seen one before. It’s a really good idea seeing as it’s pretty hard to spot the fish in a pond. Do they sell 3D printing material that is transparent? Also does the fish tank need legs / what will the under water portion look like?

This is really cool; is this something people have done before? If so, do the fish actually tend to swim up above the waterline? I gotta imagine there will be a good bit of pressure on the walls of the tank, the acrylic will have to be decently thick, and sealed well. Maybe some sort of tooth joint or an L bracket ,in addition to caulk, would help add strength.

I think this is a really unique idea, and it was very creative to use the fish as part of the dynamic aspect of the project. Choosing what type of fish to have in the tank will be a large part of the aesthetic, and I’m sure looking at different types will be a lot of fun. Good luck!

This is a really cool idea, and it seems as if you already know how you are going to build it. I like the idea of having the fish as the dynamic part of this project. Are you going for multiple species of fish? With some research, you may be able to find cheap and colorful looking fish. Curious to see how this turns out!
