Top 5 Constraints: The YAYA

Just as a reminder, I am designing and constructing a backpack for my main project. These are in no particular order of importance. I listed more than 5, because I have multiple requirements that I am striving to meet.

  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Represents/displays aspects of classic asian architecture and samurai armor aesthetics
  • Uses modern fabrics, such as tight weave nylons with ripstop thread patterns
  • 18-22 L in max volume
  • Fits a 15″ Macbook
  • Total material cost < $25

  • I liked what you brought to class this week. I think you’re going to have a good prototype to show off. But for your constraints you should probably flesh these out a bit—would definitely help others see the project from your point of view and might even give you a new perspective on something. For instance, why is that size important? What do you consider “lightweight” for a backpack of this size? If it needs to be durable AND fit a laptop, doesn’t that create an additional constraint: that it needs to be significantly padded or shelled in some way, in order to protect the electronics inside?

First of all, I’m really excited to see how this backpack turns out cuz you’ve been wanting to make one for so long. It would be very cool to have this be a marketable product. Just out of curiosity, if you were to move forward with your backpack and try to put it out there as a viable consumer product, what aspect of your design sets it apart from other backpacks out there?
