Top 5 Constraints: Infinity Mirror

Aesthetic:

To make this mirror different than others seen online I want to create a new frame that encases the illusion that this mirror will produce. Since the mirror will already have a futuristic look and feel to it I decided to continue off this idea to create the aesthetic for the frame. To achieve this I am going to focus on creating an elegant and seamless frame to hold the mirrors and LEDs.

Function:

The purpose of this main project is to create a dynamic artifact and I plan to do just that. Many of the infinity mirrors I’ve seen online just change between solid colors, I want my LEDs to be even more dynamic so I am going to use a strip of individually addressable diodes.

Size:

I plan to keep this mirror in my house somewhere and therefor want it to be big enough to have a cool looking illusion but also small enough so it doesn’t take up a lot of wall space. This led me to constrain the size somewhere near 24″ x 24″.

Frame:

Since the frame is going to be such a large part of the aesthetic appeal I want it to be unique. I really want to create a frame out of black anodized aluminum and am deep into researching 8020 aluminum profiles to see how practical it will be to achieve a seamless design.

Budget:

I do want to keep this mirror in my future house for as many years as possible so spending a little bit more to create a better final product seems reasonable to me. Since the aluminum, LEDs, and glass are all pretty expensive items, I am trying to limit my budget to less than $200.

You have done a great job outlining the project considerations, and it looks like it’s going to be really fun to create! If you have some extra LEDs left over you can consider putting them on the back of the frame to light up the area on the wall around the mirror as well. I am interested to see how the 8020 aluminum works for your project!
