20th Century Design Movements: Zoetrope

For my final project I decided to make a Zoetrope. It is a primitive animation device which behaves behaves very much like a flip-book. The three different aesthetics that I explored in this post are Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Streamlined design of the 1930s. The way I reimagined my design into these very prominent aesthetics, is by sketching a very popular product from that movement and trying to blend that design and making it my own.

Art Deco

Tries to imbue functional objects with artistic touches. Straight lines, patterns and a fractal like approach is what I take away from Art Deco design.

Art Nouveau

According to me, the Art Nouveau style tries to breathe some life into objects and giving it an artistic touch. Making each object seem just as much as a work of art as a product.

Streamlined design of the 1930s

This design was mainly inspired by the WW2 when they realized the magic of aerodynamic efficiency. It was a time when war-inspired gadgets were making their way into the everyday household, it was a way of feeling involved in the changing times, and gave rise to a wonderful aesthetic.

I hope you enjoyed my rendition of my project into different design movements.

Love your sketches. I really like the art deco style. I must say that you have integrated each aesthetic with an example design particular to that movement is genius. I know you are leaning towards an Art Nouveau style for your project. Really looking forward to see how that turns out. Great Job!

I am jealous of your sketching ability, especially on the Art Deco sketch. I really like that aesthetic and reminds me of an old looking radio. I like the idea of a Zoetrope as well. I have never heard of one and they are very cool!

really nice job and thoughtful work on these design revisions. I think that this is a very accurate representation of your project depicted into different styles and how it may look if it was actually designed in the times where these styles were in peak fashion. Nice work and i am curious to see if any of these style alterations effect the final design which you produce.

Your sketching is great! I also like how you showed some inspiration for all of your designs and I think you did a great job of using these inspirations in your project.

  • These are great sketches! It looks like you’ve spent a lot of time envisioning and drawing them out. They demonstrate the aesthetics you selected very well. It was a good touch to include a brief explanation of each of the aesthetics you chose. Do you have a final aesthetic that you are going with? Or is it one of these three? If so, what made you go with that one? Great job overall!
