Upcycle Inspiration: Spiral Staircase

As I mentioned in my last blog post, the base of my lamp is inspired by a spiral staircase. The spiral staircase I was directly inspired by was from a DIY (Do it yourself) video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd-Z7OTAjJ0, by Ben Uyeda on Facebook I saw a couple of months ago (You can find Ben Uyeda and his work at https://www.instagram.com/benjaminuyeda/?hl=en) . In the video he makes a spiral staircase out of thin sheets of wood as seen in the cover photo of this blog post. In my lamp, the base of the lamp is thin sheets of cardboard that also spiral up as seen below.

For the lamp shade I plan on making it out of coffee filters. This idea came to me from Girl Scouts. When I was in Girl Scouts we did a lot of crafts with coffee filters. I remembered those crafts and thought these would work very well for the aesthetic I am aiming for with my upcycled lamp.

Really interesting idea! I love the spiral staircase you took as inspiration and a smaller lamp version would be a fun addition to any room. I will definitely look at your later posts to see how this turned out.

I like the spiral staircase idea. When I read that you’re making a lamp with a staircase base, my initial thought was what if the top looked like a tree house, and the light comes out of the windows and door? Then you mentioned being a girls scout and I thought that would be a perfect design drawn from your own personal experience that uses and aesthetic you love. Whatever you end up creating, I’m excited to see!

  • This project seems really creative and I can’t wait to see the final product! I would love to see more progress pictures because I don’t completely understand the design from this one photo.
