Upcycle Progress/Inspiration

This week has been hands on for me, I have been making my upcycling project but I don’t know the meaning of it just yet. I built a cardboard frame and I am filling the sides with cut up cardboard tubes. In total I used about a quarter of my latest amazon order box, four paper towel tubes (~1ft) and a long cardboard tube I found (~3ft). I have used about 100+ staples.

Frame Almost Complete

A vast majority of the components I am using I found in my apartment I decided to experiment with staples and they turned out to be a great method of joining the rings.

Stitching the rings with staples

I decided to go with black paint because it absorbs the most light hence it will make it more difficult to detect any defects in the construction.

This is what it currently looks like I don’t know what sort of background I will put between the ring weave and the frame but I want to hopefully fin some sort of recycled space magazine with a starts and constellations. I may have one somewhere in a pile of old stuff. I am very passionate about space and I think art is an opportunity to uncover current events and scientific endeavors. So if I do find a space magazine I know the meaning otherwise I would like to add a brightly colored background to it thus creating an expressionistic flow of feelings from the contrasting colors.

I like the transition into using black colors to create a very contrasting base for this project. Cardboard can be difficult to handle but is worth it once you finish as its cheap and normally households have an abundance of them.

This is a great use of black color! good job. I saw your project in the finishing room and it looks really nice. I would put a lamp underneath it and I think the shadow of the rings will be allover the place. I can’t wait to see what will you decide on!! Good luck.

Hey Andres! This is looking really cool thus far and I like the project as a whole based on some of the information you gave me during lecture. I am excited to see where this goes moving forward. I do have to wonder what it will look like compared to your initial imagined idea. Do you have any inspiration that you could add to this and share with us? Maybe it was in your initial blog post. How do you plan on displaying this? I think that a big part of this display that you should also focus on is the audience. I am mainly thinking about where this project will go. Is it in a house? What room? Will it be displayed on the floor below eye level or will it be hung from above? Good luck moving forward and keep it up!
