Draw-String T-Shirt

This is the final product.

The image above is the aesthetic I chose to create and is a draw string t-shirt. Below I will go over the process of creation.

First…

Gather shoe lace and shirt.

Second…

Cut shoe lace in half.

Third…

Cut hole in the middle of the shirt.

Fourth…

Put safety pin on end of lace and feed through each end of the shirt.

Fifth…

Make sure length is correct.

Finally…

Sew down shoelace from backside of shirt,

Constraints

The safety pins are stuck in the shirt because I didn’t want to have to cut two more holes to remove them.

The center hole is in pretty bad shape but it could be fixed if I fed the lace through rings and used a fabric glue to put the rings on the shirt.

Overall I am happy with my final product!

Nice idea and approach for upcycling, everything you used was found around your home. It would be interesting to see it as part of a full look.

  • I do understand snarky sayings on T shirts as an aesthetic, but I don’t understand the role of the draw string. Could you describe that more fully?

  • The Modifying a t-shirt idea is a cool idea, t-shirts are such a normal part of the world that the aesthetics of them are kind of taken for granted and looked over, except in what is printed on them, so changing the actual form of it instead of adding a graphic is a good direction to go with it. Was there any consideration into changing the shoelace that was used, maybe adding a contrast to it instead of having the same color string as the shirt?

  • This idea was definitely an out of the box one. I have never heard of a drawstring shirt before today but now it’s all I want to wear! You should make a bunch of these and market the product. The text on the shirt too was very awesome. Great work Jerrald

  • This project seems cool but I think you could have taken it further. If you had used a black shirt you could have used grommets and that would make the holes for the string look nicer.

I’ve never heard of a draw string shirt before. I liked the process you went through to create it and liked how you explained where you got your inspiration from. The comparison images were really good and helped emphasize your presentation.

Nice idea. I wonder what you could have done to the area you cut in order to make it look nice. Maybe you could use hot glue or something? Great inspiration and nice finished product!

  • This project involved processes that are not usually done in engineering, such as sewing. The draw string, shoelace aesthetic is very hip and nothing that I have ever seen before today. It would be really cool to see this shirt in its finished state look something like the c’est normal shirt shown.

  • Like the design and inspiration. The words are definitely true. Next one should be a pair of sweat pants with shoelaces as the belt.

  • Looks like a great final product! It would be cool to get a few of them printed up and you could sew on your own drawstrings.

This is a unique design. instead of using the safety pin maybe you could have used a wire to pull the shoelace through the hole.
