Final Project Inspirations

I had some trouble figuring out what I should make for this project. I knew I wanted something that I would keep for a while but I couldn’t decide if I wanted something beautiful with no purpose or if I wanted something that I could actually use.

I decided that I should focus on making something using a skill that I had never had before. Through my engineering curriculum I have had a lot of experience with machining, SolidWorks, coding, etc. but I have never done any sewing or work with fabric. Using this thought process I decided to come full circle from my up-cycle project where I made a 50s style dress out of paper and make some sort of clothing in the same 50s aesthetic.

I recently watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon. This show is set in the late 1950s and the main character Midge Maisel wears the most incredible dresses and coats all the time. She had one coat in particular that stood out to me (shown above as the featured image).

I will be trying to recreate that coat so that I can have an awesome 50s style winter coat that I can actually wear. I am super excited about this project now that I found something I really want to make!

As a stretch goal I would like to make a 50s outfit to go with the coat as well. This depends on how difficult the coat is to make. Since I have never done any sewing I have no idea how long this will take or how difficult it will be at all so I am going to start early and hopefully make another piece that is not just the coat.

Here are some of her other outfits from the show that I think might be cool to recreate.

I think it is awesome that you are going to make another piece of clothing. It will be tricky to make a DIY piece of clothing durable enough for regular usage, especially something that endures as much as a coat. I’m curious to see how it ends up.

I love that show!! Mrs. Maisel’s outfits are always on point. They are perfectly tailored, sharp yet elegant. I’m excited to see the results! My only concern about this project is how is it user interactive? Will you be adding an element that is interactive to the coat?
