Main Project Inspiration

I’m still not sure exactly what I will be making for the final project in this class. However, I’ve been fascinated with modular design over the past couple of months. Modular design breaks down a design into it’s many parts and emphasizes the users specific needs. It’s modeled around making scalable and reusable modules. I think this is a very interesting and different approach to design that I think deserves more attention. Most design is fixed, and only lets the designer make the choices. The main reason I want to apply this to my project is that as a college student, my needs are always changing and I want my project to be able to change along side them.

Since i’m unsure about what my final design will be, I wanted my inspiration to transcend all types of design. Modular design can be applied to furniture design, product design, art and even on a larger scale like architecture.

For my final piece I either want to make something super functional such as a desk organizer or shelves, or some sort of art piece for my room.

Hi Andre, great choice for a main project. Modular systems for a time were becoming more and more popular 2-3 years ago. Many companies saw it as the next revolution for technology, but it failed for some reason. While building your modular system, will you try and address the reasons why modular systems failed and attempt to solve them?

Hey Andre I like the modular idea and I’m excited to see how your project turns out. Are you planning on making it a functional project or more of an aesthetic art piece? I think you also have a lot of potential to implement interesting aesthetics to help guide the modular design.

  • Hi Andre, really cool idea. I like the idea of creating something from modular pieces. Might be worth checking out some of the sparkfun tutorials, and adapting from there. Looking forward to your final design!
