Design Review Report

Inspiration:

The inspiration for this project came when I was getting ready for bed. As I walked to bed I took off my watch and ear rings and threw them on the nearest clean space on my night stand. However, I had to move my light to find a bigger clean pace for my phone. This is when I wondered what kind of night stands were out there that incorporated enough space for a phone and ear rings while also keeping the light out the way.

My room is a mix of different types and colors of wood, so I only thought it was fair I try to combine a few materials with a wood, such as Walnut. Below is some of the light scrap available at Building 61 at the Boulder Public Library.

Research:

L-Shaped Lamp
Custom-Made Floating Shelf / Floating Nightstand

Prototyping:

Both of these prototypes were made using cardboard and hot glue. The first prototype was originally more of a night stand topper or a very thin floating night stand. This concept incorporated a concept of a built in phone charger, a watch stand/charger, a couple compartments for watches, ear rings, and pocket change. The box represents a rectangular lamp in the corner. This night stand was meant to be perched on the left hand side of the bed.

The second prototype was more of a night stand with room for books, a phone charger, a glass of water, a compartment for ear rings, pocket change, an L-shaped light, and a display showing the date, time, weather, and possibly an alarm.

The compartment labeled phone charger will be a wireless built in port that goes underneath the wood itself. The wood will be a light maple or white plywood, since it is easier to get consistent colors on things that didn’t use to be alive. There will be a dark brown leather vinyl in a triangular shape on the top and the side furthest from the bed. This will make room for the bronze accented light that will contain the display and holder. This light will be dynamic to ensure that it can be rotated or tilted.

Overall this design represents something that looks very minimalistic, but will have a lot of texture and dynamic pieces integrated into it.

Materials:

I’m not sure what your current table looks like, but it sounds like it will be a big change to go from a such a clutter that you can’t set your phone down to a compartmentalized night stand. I like that your report includes a materials list.

  • This is a super cool idea and I’m sure it will look great once you’re done. I love woodworking aesthetics so this is something that really interests me.

I like the aesthetic you are going for with the white wood and dark leather. They will compliment each other well. Maybe you can make the light fixture bendable in a way that it can be hidden on the side of the desk when not being used.

I like the minimalist aesthetic and I like that you are incorporating different materials but still making it work with the minimalist aesthetic. I am concerned about making it look as cool as you want it to while keeping the price reasonable.

I think the desk will turn out pretty neat. Great prototype examples. Best of luck!

I like your inspiration of decluttering, I feel that really correlates to the minimalistic aesthetic you’re going for. Have you thought of using fabric to incorporate texture?

Cool design and very useful especially to help keep things more organized. The function of it seems to be a huge focus, do you think any of the functionality focus will take away from the aesthetic of it, or will it add to it?

I like the idea of a minimalist style desk. I can see this being used on a daily basis. The prototype you showed was helpful. Were you thinking of making the colors minimalistic as well?

You put a lot of work into the prototype! I like the minimalism and overall design. I hope this is something you can use for a while.
