Design Review Report: Dive Watch Style Wall Clock

I am building a wall clock for my final project. I plan to use this clock so I need to make sure I like the style. Personally I like the diver watch aesthetics so I am making a wall clock that resembles the style. Below are a few iconic diver watches in the market: (Rolex Submariner, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, Omega Seamaster from left to right).

The most distinguishable aesthetic features of the dive watches are the outer bezel ring and lumed hands and hour marks. The style of the dial is relatively clean. For my wall clock I will use the simple and clean dial style and make the hour marks pronounced and easy to see. I will not make a bezel ring like on the dive watches because it wouldn’t make sense to use it to time anything while the clock’s hanging on the wall.

My idea is to buy a piece of round shaped aluminum for the dial. I will make the drawing using Solidworks for the dail and use the laser cutter to make the hour marks. The movement will be bought from the shelf. I will use LED lighting behind the dial so that the white light will shine through the hour mark cutouts.

The design looks pretty straight-forward but I have never used the laser cutter before. I am not too sure how well it will go.

I really like this idea. I love the aesthetic of watches and I think this will look very cool as a wall clock. This also seems like a great way to get to use the laser cutter and learn more about it.

I really enjoy collecting watches so I’m excited to see you craft an entire dive watch for your project. It will be very tricky to perfect the finer details and to seal the watch since it is a dive watch. I like the double layered acrylic idea and using light to reflect through that.

  • I really like the diver watch look as well! I have one I always wear when I scuba dive! I think this project will be a blast to put together! I think you should experiment with the materials you will be using to see which is most suitable. Good luck!

I think your finished product will look really nice! You have a very clear aesthetic and I think that will be very helpful for you moving forward. Also, I’m sure the ITLL staff will be happy to help you with the laser cutter. Good luck!

I am fond of seeing design concepts being applied in unusual sizes either on a bigger or a smaller scale. It is a refreshing take on a regular wall clock. I know there is an acrylic material that looks like metal on one side which you can use to achieve the stainless steel look you’re going for.

  • Shen, I use a dive watch when I go scuba diving so I really like this aesthetic. You could use a layered acrylic for the laser cutter. This material is not the cheapest, but would look cool!

    • “The ITLL has three CO2 laser cutters available for student/staff/faculty use on a first come first served basis. These machines are able to cut or engrave materials such as acrylic, cardboard, paper, leather and wood up to ⅜” thick for cutting and up to 14” thick for engraving.”

  • I like your idea to combine dive watch design element with your final project. The displayment design from dive watch will contributes a lot for the outlook of your project. And I suggest to use a green background for your clock which makes it look like the famous diver watch–Rolex diver green!

I really like the idea of the LED backlight! I would recommend looking into EL plates for the lighting, as they can provide an even glow of light behind the clock face.

  • The aesthetic is very well defined. I like this project as I myself am a scuba diver and having something like this on the wall is neat. The lights shining through the holes is very creative as well. Are you going to use different colors at each hour or the same color for the entire clock?
