Project Aesthetics Compared to 20th Century Designs: Infinity Mirror Clock

My aesthetic takes on a contemporary design. It has a mixture of futurism, surrealism, and modernism designs. The frame is modernistic in that it s squared, using straight lines and no extra artistic components. The wood will be stained a dark color and the numbers will be burned into the wood. The futuristic look comes from the use of multicolored LEDs. The affect that the infinity mirror produces is what gives it the surrealism aesthetic.

Three other potential designs I came up with are a minimalist design, an art deco design, and a postmodernist design.

Minimalist: For this design, I would get rid of the frame/border and simply have the pieces put together with nut and bolts. The LEDs would still be colored.

Art Deco: This is my favorite of the 3 options. It consist of a more elaborate frame made of dark wood with gold accents for the lines. The numbers would be colored in black. The LEDs would be only white to add to this aesthetic.

Postmodernist: This design would have a border with a lot of curvature. The frame would be broken into many segments, each colored differently. The numbers would be placed in random orientations. The LED’s would also be multiple colors.

I love your sketches and how you considered every aspect of the aesthetic including colors of LED’s. The project sounds cool regardless of the aesthetic you choose. Good job!

  • HI Yazen,
Overall, I am a big fan of your project. I think the mixture of the dark wood and the futuristic effect from the LEDs produces an interesting and unique look to the project. In terms of 20th century designs, I too think art deco would be a cool design incorporation to your project.

  • Very cool way to relate each of the design movements to your project. I wonder if designers of the time actually created clocks like this back then (minus the LED’s obviously).

I like the ideas with the LED’s, but am curious on if this was ever utilized in 20th century design. This seems to be more prevalent in the 21st century. I enjoy your design ideas!
