Shen’s Final Project Report Part 2: Why and What Next?

At the designing phase of the final project I already knew what I wanted to build, which was a dive watch style wall clock. Below are my initial design and the final product picutres:

It’s pretty obvious that my final product stayed very consistant with the initial design. However there are some details that didn’t end up matching my origianal idea. These discrepancies include: The “Made in Boulder, CO” line didn’t show up on the final product because the laser cutter wasn’t set up correctly; the clock dial doesn’t block light perctly due to spray paint thickness too small, etc.

The lesson that I learned from this project is mainly to leave extra time for any project I work on in the future because anything can go wrong during a project and end up delaying the whole process. I used laser cutter and 3D printer for this project and both machines didn’t perform perfectly.

The lesson I learned from the class include the knowledge about industrial design basics and modern art history. As an engineering student I wasn’t exposed to enough materials about this subject and I think this class is very beneficial for engineering students. It’s all about being creative and start building what you have in mind using your school learned skills.

I do have plans on improving my project clock. Right now the clock case is lacking some good color and quality. I plan to make a new one with a clear front cover as well so the clock will be dust proof. I will also work on a better design of how the major components attach to each other to make this clock more practical to use.

I really like how well this came out, and how well you were able to stick to your original design idea and bring it to life! I think the clock would be really cool if you made the casing actually look like an oversized watch, the novelty of it would really make for a cool piece.

Shen, I like the design of your project and as you said you did a good job of meeting that design. It’s also good to hear that you learned about industrial design and art through this class, that will be important to know in the future and set you aside from other engineers. Good luck improving your clock and evolving it into something you love!
