Upcycle Inspiration: Plastic Spoons

For my upcycle project, I drew inspiration from the internet. I searched the internet for ideas on upcycling and came across an idea that seemed artistic yet functional. The main material I am planning on using will be plastic spoons. I plan on creating a lamp using the heads of the plastic spoons as decoration. Lining the spoon heads together and overlapping them over each other will create a look similar to that of an armadillo. This can be done by using a hot glue gun to glue the spoon heads onto a large plastic bottle. The by running a hanging light cord though the head of the bottle and adding a light bulb, it’ll become a functional lamp.

Hi Bryan! This seems to be a great concept for this project, as when I think of leftover plastic spoons, I immediately think of them as not having much value from a recycling perspective. I also like how elegant the arrangement of them looks in the design inspiration image, almost like a white lotus flower. As a suggestion, if you can find a way to re-purpose the handles of the spoons you use within your final product that would be quite impressive!

    • Hey Justin, thanks for the input on my project. I never thought about re purposing the handles but I agree that it would be cool if I could. I’ll try and figure something out!

    Bryan,
Love the idea and I think it will look really cool once youre finished. What will the rest of the lamp be made from? Up-cycled materials? Does it have a base or something for it to be supported by? Also have you thought about the possibility of light not being able to penetrate through the thick plastic of the spoons? just some thoughts. Looking forward to seeing the end result!

    • Hey Nathaniel, I wasn’t really thinking about creating a base for the lamp. I imagined it was kind of like a chandelier where it would just hang from the cord attached to the ceiling. Also, I was planning on using thin, white plastic spoons and hopefully the light bulb I use is bright enough to shine through. Thank you for the comments!
