Main Project Inspirations

General Idea

As an extension of my upcycle project, I have decided to construct a pair of lighting fixtures for my final project; one floor lamp and one overhead lighting fixture. They will be similar and complimentary in design and form. Likely, the top of the floor lamp will be nearly identical to the overhead light. I wish to work In the modernist aesthetic, with simple forms and dark wood colors and finishes.

Inspirations

I have been recently taken with the modernist aesthetic, particularly modernist furniture. The Herman Miller Furniture Company is a strong inspiration for me in this project. Some of their pieces, such as the Eames Lounge chair, define modernist furniture for many.

Herman Miller’s current lighting fixtures include standing lamps and overhead lighting, and while I enjoy the form of them, I intend to make my main project out of wood, so I won’t be drawing any direct inspiration form those pieces.

I can’t find any examples of lamps that demonstrate the idea I have, but I suppose that’s not all bad. I’ll outline exactly what that idea is over the following weeks.

  • This sounds very fun, especially considering how wood and light play off very well creating a cozy atmosphere. I’m curious about the floor lamp. I look forward to seeing what you plan. What type of wood do you hope and plan to use?

I think this would be a great project! These are aesthetically pleasing to have around an area. something random is I saw something of this aesthetic at a MacDonalds once and it was very different in a sense that it brought a warmer light into the restaurant.
