Design Review Part 1

I decided to make an acrylic sword that is inspired by this youtube video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNKuYWfOlzI&t=135s

For the design of my sword I decided to go with the Elucidator from the Anime, “Sword Art online”. I managed to find a photo of the sword below which actually has a template.

The sword is to be laser cutting with 1/8″ Acrylic. And an Led strip powered by batteries will be ran throughout the inside of the acrylic.

This is what the CAD model looks like so far. I will update this once more research is done.

Materials:
24″ x 36″ White acrylic
LED Light Strip
Glue/Double sided tape

Tools:
Laser Cutter

    Kensue,

I like how you’ve decided to take on something as awesome and epic as a sword. I love when you get to physically manifest things we enjoy from other worlds. I think your idea with LED is super cool and I think this project would get some awesome looks at some expo show!

Comments on Meaning: I love the fact that you took all the individual parts that you will laser cut and put it in an assembly model in Solidworks to make sure everything fits.

  • Hey Kensue,
I would suggest making the top and bottom layers to be slightly shorter than the middle layer so that the led lights will be more prevalent. I would also suggest you find a way to implement the light box into the handle of the sword so that you wouldn’t need to carry it outside of the sword. Maybe make the handle thicker and put the light box inside if it’s small enough.

Cool idea! I like your use of laser cutting. It is a very easy and effective way to prototype and make 2D shapes. Have you thought about integrating another material into the project? Maybe wood on the handle or something like that? I would be worried that the square corners on the handle would be a little uncomfortable to hold.

Cool design! How bulky is the electronics housing?

  • Kensue,
I like the design of the sword, do you plan on using this as a piece of art? With the idea of the lights in mind it would be cool to use as a kind of lamp. Also would be cool to do this as an installation, as in you have one that’s a sword, maybe one that’s like an axe and one that’s a shield each with their own colors! But the sword is a good design.

have you decided what LED patterns you want to use? Also where are you going to put your electronics?
