Construction update: reading table

So thus far I have a table. I began by with a piece of live edge elm wood I got from a sawmill in town.

I then cut the wood to the proper size by using a hand held circular saw. The wood was thicker than the saw blade so I had to do a pass on each side and then clean up the cut with sandpaper. After cutting I then sanded the surface and edges until smooth. Before staining I used a small piece that I had cut off for a tester of my stain.
I decided I wanted it darker so I did two coats which worked fine. I then stained the entire piece.

After this I covered the wood in a layer of polyurethane and let it dry in my shed for a few days. This made the surface shiny and I used steel wool to buff it to a satin finish.

Finally I got hairpin legs off of amazon and attached them to finish the table part of the project.

Moving forward I need to create the lighting fixture that will be the movable piece of this project.

    Hey Miles.

I love the dark stain and hairpin legs! I’m also glad to hear you were still able to secure some live edge wood to stay close to your inspiration of George Nakashima. Will you try to make the moving light fixture similar in coloration to the table (black brushed metal, and dark wood tones)?

Miles, this came out really well. I really enjoy the aesthetic as well. How did you decide on the dimensions of the table? Were you building the table with a specific use in mind (e.g. bed side table, coffee table, etc.)? I am interested in seeing the table and light when it is finished. Great work.
