Final Report Part 1 2020 – Tripod Chair

INSPIRATION

For my final project, I decided to make a simple but functional tripod chair. When doing research and looking for some inspiration on what I could do for my project, I stumbled onto a video showing how to make a “DIY” or “do-it-yourself” tripod chair. This video showed how to make a simple tripod chair using some basic materials that can be easily found in any hardware store. In the video however, for the seat, they decided to use a cut out piece of leather. For my project, I wanted to add a little more functionality and create a seat using paracord.

VISION

To start, when deciding on an aesthetic for my final project, there was one aesthetic that I thought would embody my idea and function of my chair the most. I wanted to go with a “camping” or utilitarian aesthetic since my intent for making the tripod chair would be to use it for camping trips or similar outdoor activities. To fit into this aesthetic I wanted to keep the look of my project extremely simple and only have the necessities with nothing extra to fit a utilitarian look. A look that has the bare minimum and shows the idea of “what you see is what you get”. In the end, I chose to use paracord for the seat so that it can be cut off or untied from the chair and be used for other situations such as emergency rope or string to pull something or hold something together. So aside from be a very portable chair, the paracord acts as a another functional aspect of my project if needed.

INITIAL SKETCH

In my initial sketch I followed closely with the video I took inspiration from. For materials I would need three wooden dowels each with a 24″ length and 1.5″ diameter. I would also need three eye screws, a hanger bolt, an eye bolt, and a few washers and cap nuts. For my design I would drill holes for the bolts in the center of each dowel. Then, attach the dowels to the bolts as depicted on the right side of my initial sketch page. After that I would screw the eye screws to the top of each dowel and create a paracord weave that runs through the eye screws to create the seat.

Great Work Brian. I hope you got at least a little bit done with the COVID still around. I’l like to see what it looks like at the end. Good luck.

Hi Bryan. You don’t necessarily mention whether or not you were able to make your project in light of COVID pandemic but I certainly hope you did! The idea is simple but clever. I like how useful it is and easy to set up. I like your choice of materials and the notion of “what you see is what you get.” In the photos the chair looks like it is on the smaller scale, which is not bad at all. Would you consider making it larger or making multiple ones in different sizes?
