Upcycle Progress: crocheted plastic bag sandals

In the true recycle fashion, I will not spend any money on my upcycle project. I have a clear idea of what I will make: crocheted plastic bag sandals. I’ve never crocheted anything more than half a scarf, so this project serves as a test of my arts and crafts skills.

Here’s the plan:

  • Cut the tops and bottoms off 50 plastic grocery bags (I have hundreds in a box in my kitchen, because I am a horrible Boulder citizen blah blah blah)
  • Tie the modified plastic bags into a long continuous rope and roll into a ball…plastic yarn = plarn
  • Crochet away! I’ve designed a very simple sandal pattern, similar to what Jesus would have probably worn.

These’s shoes aren’t practical, they’re avant-garde.

I really like the idea of using plastic bags, it seems like a material that a lot of people have laying around. Maybe you could use a second material to help hold the shape of the sole of the shoes. I’m not sure how stiff weaved plastic bags get though, so that might not be necessary.

This is a great material-driven project and I really appreciate the use of plastic bags (I, too, am using plastic bags because I’m a horrible Boulder citizen). Even though these shoes won’t be incredibly practical, I’d suggest adding some structure to the sole with cardboard or something just for fun and maybe give them a test run. But otherwise, can’t wait to see what the final product is going to look like!
