Main Project Inspiration

Inspiration

I have been thinking about what I want to create for my main project for a long time.  I went back and forth between a couple ideas, and the only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to make something that would be useful to use in my house.  The first thing that came to mind is our kitchen.  We need a place where it is easier to store kitchen devices like spatulas and large spoons, because they are all currently jammed into a small container.  I thought about making a way that you can turn something and easily grab a spatula. I could not quite pinpoint this idea though.  Then, I thought about how to make our spices and sauces more accessible to everyone when we eat dinner together.  We are consistently all sitting down for dinner together, and we always have to reach or pass the different spices and sauces throughout the meal.  This sparked an inspiration of mine.  Over the summer, I went to dim-sum with my coworkers, and it was very easy for everyone to try all of the different foods because of the turn table they had in the middle.  I had honestly never seen this before.  I did a bit of research and realized that this a common thing, and I could easily make a sizable one to put spices and sauces on.

Turn Table

Ideas Moving Forward

I haven’t exactly figured out which materials I will use to make this turn table happen yet.  I have found different ideas online, and it looks like I can easily get a round piece of wood from a scrap store or home depot, but I haven’t decided yet.  I also haven’t figured out what I will use to make it easily turn, but I am doing research on that.  As for the color of wood, I want it to be a dark and classy wood color so I will most likely have to go to home depot or McGuckin’s to purchase some wood staining paint.  I also want to decorate the top, so I will be on the look out for different things to help decorate it as well.

Very practical idea. Since you intend to put spices and sauces on the turn table have you though about making it have a couple levels so that the turn table isn’t super wide but just a little tall instead? I think that if the wood is nice enough, just staining it could be a cool aesthetic and you wouldn’t need anything else on the object.

One thing about this post that I really appreciated about this post was your citation of sources. But do you have a link for the photo?

Very cool idea! The dark wood sounds very classy, and laser cutting designs could be really interesting. I envision it like a centerpiece with a flower vase in the middle. The decorations and artistic style will make the project even more unique. Good luck!

what a really practical project piece! I love when inspirations are found in needing solutions to other problems, rather than just being random. Dark wood would definitely look refined and high end. In my head, I’m picturing two glass pieces on top of one another instead of wood, with something like pressed dried flowers in between as the aesthetic/design part. That could be very pretty, but i tend to be very biased toward floral designs 🙂

I’m very curious to see how this turns out. The idea itself should be feasible but I’m curious to see what artistic or aesthetic style you chose when decorating the outside. Paints could be an interesting way to approach it, as could later cutting shapes or pieces that could be incorporated into the design.
