Main Project Inspirations: iTunes Silhouettes in 3D

For my main project, I have decided to create a hologram based on one of the most successful advertising campaigns ever executed.  My project is inspired by the iTunes and iPod TV commercials and web, print, and billboard advertisements that were widespread from early 2000 to 2011.  Chances are you will recognize these iconic figures as dancing silhouettes against vibrantly colored backgrounds.  Images are shown below:

I also recommend taking a peek at this highly informative website outlining the specifics and scope of the iTunes advertising campaign:

I remember these campaigns vividly as they were highly influential during my preteen and teenage years, so as I look back now, first of all, I feel uncomfortably old, and secondly, I am incredibly reminiscent.  It is fascinating to see how far Apple has come especially as Apple Music and other streaming services continue to grow in success.  This is just one of many reasons I am fascinated by the tech industry.  You never quite know what lies around the corner and you certainly have no way of knowing what’s to come ten years down the line.

Anyway, for my course project, I plan to use this inspiration as fuel for my aesthetic design.  I will create innovative hologram video footage (4 panels) in Adobe Premiere and will create colorful dancers painted across a black background.

My video and hologram will also incorporate music.  I plan to use something lively and light-hearted such as Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.”  This song was popular during my teen years and was often advertised with Apple products creating even greater significance in regards to its use in my final project.

Beyond this, previously created holograms are a great source of inspiration for me.  I continue to experiment with techniques and materials and look forward to refining my design to create as clear and as large an image as possible.  The photo below shows a hologram video available on Youtube.

This will be sick! I know firsthand just how much of a pain working with small tech can be, but there is plenty of free code and advice for projects like this. If you search “DIY hologram” online I’m sure all kinds of stuff will pop up. Arduino is “easy” (its not in my opinion, but probably easier than most anything else), and it allows you to build fully customized I/O (input/output) devices. If you go with that I can help you. Basically, unless you are buying a plug-and-play hologram device, you need to build the hardware (the actual circuit) and the software. The Microcontroller, which that tells the hologram (an output device) what to do, need to receive an input (the picture or video) in a way it can understand and can send to the hologram. There is all kinds of free code, circuit diagrams, and advice for stuff like this online. Good luck!

Wow!! Very creative and an extraordinary blend of tech and advertising. I agree with Tori’s comment about using vibrant colors and music. I am excited to see the results!

This looks very awesome! Is there a certain program you can use to make the person dancing easily visible or do you have to sketch it out and create it all from scratch? I have noticed a lot of people in our class love this kind of hologram art, so you may consider reaching out to them! My only advice would be use lots of different color and very exciting music.
