Design Review: Remote Controlled Horse Jump

Design Review: Remote Controlled Horse Jump

The project is still in the beginning stages of the design process.  I have been looking for materials that would work for the aesthetic of a lighted sculpture piece.  Above is a picture of the prototype demonstrating the aesthetic. Finding appropriate materials to construct the jump is the biggest challenge.  I envisioned using clear plastic pipe/tubing and putting lights inside.  The other main challenge is finding bright enough lights which will be visible during the day.  If the lights are not visible, the aesthetic would not necessarily be effective.

Alternative Aesthetics:

-Art Deco: Using geometric repetitive patterns to create an interesting jump.

-Pop/Comic Book Fantasy: Build a fantasy comic book style jump.

Great idea! I didn’t know that horse jumps were not automated. You could potentially have a serious business idea here if you can make it function well! Putting lights on it is a cool addition, but you may have problems with seeing them during the day. Maybe making your pieces from acrylic will allow for the LED’s to light up the entire structure!

i think this will turn out as a great project. maybe incorporating some neon paint along with the lights will help the aesthetic stand out during the day.

  • I think this project will be very challenging but very rewarding. Creating the moving bars that can fall will be a tricky task especially if you are going to incorporate light into the bars themselves.

  • It’s awesome that you’re creating a project that is so practical to you. Designing something that you can use everyday and that will make your life easier is such a good way to use this class. I also think it is going to look awesome if it comes out like you have it planned! The prototype with glow sticks was very cool. I hope your final project is just as flashy!

You did an amazing job of focusing on the aesthetic of your project versus the function of your design. Fantastic execution. Now that you have your aesthetic is solidified your function of the remote control will only enhance your design.

  • Your prototype is a really good representation of what you want to build for your project. It may be difficult to incorporate lights since it is mainly used during the day. You could try building a roof over the tops of the pipes to give it some shade to help the light stand out better, like the visor over a stoplight.

  • I like the project! Very practical, and very easy to incorporate an aesthetic into. When I watch show jumping, every jump has a very unique and different aesthetic. Some have an alpine village aesthetic, some a futuristic, some “The Wizard of Oz” Emerald City, etc. You could go in alot of directions with this.

Katie, I liked your prototype, it conveyed a great functional demo of what you want it to do. However, what aesthetic is the glow stick demoing? It didn’t sound like you were going to make the whole thing neon colored, but instead use LEDs (maybe). Maybe it would help to look at existing horse jumps to see what they look like, and the go from there.
