Final Stretch Progress: Rick Totem

I estimate that the project is approximately 80% complete overall.

I am about 90% done with the stuffed Rick figure, and only need to attach his shoes, and make his hair (out of distressed yarn).

I have completed about 90% of the electrical components, having created a majority of the fixtures that will be mounted to the stuffed figure. I am planning to incorporate fiber optic cables to add into the hair on the figure, and still need to create the mounting brackets and bundles of cable to attach to the LED strips that mount to the figure’s head. The programming is essentially complete as well, although I may make small changes after the LEDs are attached to the figure.

I have not yet attached any of the LED fixtures to the figure, but plan to do so this weekend.

Below is a video of a test of the lighting fixtures from earlier this week.

  • Looking good! I bet you’re getting tired of soldering by this point! The synchronization is working a lot better than I expected and I like how it will chase up and down the body. Can’t wait to see everything together!

Nice job. After seeing this project through each iteration, I’m really impressed with how it’s turning out. You’re almost done now, I imagine getting the LEDs to sync to the music was the most difficult part. Again, nicely done!

Scott, it is getting close to coming alive. I am excited to see how the final rendition turns out. It may interesting to see how far you can test the musical synchronization on the fly. Perhaps letting others try out the functions with different types of music? Overall it is looking good.

  • This project looks like it’s coming along great! Are the lights synchronized to the music? If so, is that pre-programmed or can it synch to any music you play? It looks like you’ve put in a lot of work into this project. I’m looking forward to seeing the final work!

Wow! This is coming out great! Was it difficult to get the LEDs to synchronize with the music? I would imagine that the rest of the project won’t take that much longer. Great job!
