Final Stretch: standing desk

Hi everyone,

This is a quick update on how my standing desk building is going.

this is what I’ve done so far:

  • I’ve bought most of my materials: cement, cement support, wood, stain, mechanical parts, desk top
  • I’ve put the wood base of the table together (a new development, I’ve decided that it might fall over otherwise)

Wooden base for the legs of the table

  • the top of the table has been built

Using a nail gun to put the desk top together

  • both sets of bearings have been assembled

Making the lower bearing housing. This piece goes into the PVC tube, and holds a bushing for the stem

The bearing and housing, mounted in the PVC tube

  • the forms for pouring cement have been cut to size

the form for the cement is ready to go!

  • pour the cement for the base

The cement has been poured in the form (cement gets very warm when it sets, who knew!?)

This is what I’ve decided might have to change:

  • The top of the table seems too big. It looks good in solidworks, but just looks too big for the rest of the desk
  • The stain for the exposed wood parts that I was using was too dark, so I bought a different one that I think will be better.
  • I found this really cool piece of wood for where the bearing is, it’s a cut piece of a tree!

This is what I still need to do

  • cut and finish the table top
  • finish the wood base
  • cut my steel tube to size
  • attach the tube to the table
  • finish the poster

This is awesome, Kira! You’ve made a lot of progress on this and I can’t wait to see the final product come together. I was very curious to see how the cement would turn out because I’ve never worked with it before but always wanted to incorporate that in future projects. Looking great so far!

  • I really like this idea. Progress looks great so far, and it doesn’t appear there are any significant issues with your fabrication.

Working with concrete is difficult, did you have any experience using it prior to this?

What are you going to finish the concrete with? I know they make nice sealants and other coatings you can add to it.
