Final Stretch Progress: Origami PopUp Book (Main Project)

I really need to get going on my book. April hit me like a brick wall, but I finally have a lot of time to finish my project.

I purchased and gathered all of my final materials, as well as practiced marbling the paper. I left my practice pages at my parent’s home, so unfortunately I have no photos to share. I tried creating scenes and pictures with the ink, but it just came out looking like swirly blobs. Instead of painting the scenery into paper, I think I will stick to creating textures and the right colors with the marbled paper. Honestly, the best part of the project so far has been making the marbled paper on my porch.

Planning wise, I have all of the pages planned out as well as how they will look in origami form. YouTube and Pinterest have been great places to find origami tutorials. It seems everything can be made from Origami, which is really neat.

I’ve set aside a couple of hours every day this week and the entire weekend to finish my book. Excited to finally have a final product!

This was a super cool project and it came out very well! I especially like how you marbled the paper, I had to look up how to do that, and also how you used engineering paper when constructing the engineering center! Super good job this is something I’m sure you will have for years!

Very cool project! I really love all the marbling that you did and would love to learn how to do it. I like how personalized you made your project with the flatirons, the engineering center and your cat. I agree with your idea of marketing this to children: it is a very interactive way of making a journal! Good job 🙂

The final product looks so cool! I love the colors you have used and you’re oil paintings looks really nice. Great idea to get the engineering center in there and make it look cool. Great work!

It is really cool that the whole thing is bound with folding rather than glue. The pop up of the engineering center is my favorite- I think it is the most successful. The process looks soon frustrating so good for you. Was this the size that you envisioned for the final book product? I think this was a great way for you to focus on art and aesthetics and take a break from all the technical engineering you’re used to. Looks good 🙂

Excellent pop-ups and origami! I am impressed by how the pages are bound simply by folding the papers into each other. I really like the marbling patterns you put onto the rice paper.

The engineering center looks really well detailed and it came out great! I like the aesthetic that the marble paper brings out. Your presentation is really nice with highly detailed pictures. The cat pictures are adorable! I would have liked to see a longer presentation though but great project nonetheless.

Your final origami book is so cool! It is very colorful and the pop out aspects are really neat. I always loved the pop-up books as a kid and your book reminded me of some of those books I used to look at. The marbled paper looks really cool, I’ve never heard of that technique but now I want to try it!

I am still so excited to see this!! Do you think you will still be able to execute the larger size of the book that you wanted with this time constraint? Have you further considered using real pictures to fold or add in to the book?

Oh dang! Sounds like this week is going to be pretty crammed. Do you think that the sort of “zen” nature of origami clashes with this all-at-once style of execution? Or do you feel it will help keep it low-stress and enjoyable? What are you using for the structure—a pre-bound book on top of which you make the origami, or is each page it’s own creation entire?
