  • I really liked how your prototype turned out so I was excited to see how the final product would be. The plywood is a good idea because it has a good look to it. I really like the different patterns you put on the wood, it looks very clean and very modern. I can’t believe the amount of time you spent drilling and assembling, sounds like a long day. How much did this all cost? I liked Professor Hertzberg’s suggestion to put a finish on it, that’s a good idea.

Could I buy this nightstand from you?!! its a very cool design. It was great to see you project progression from a standing sitting desk to a night stand. Why did you use 2x4s to put the panels together. DId you thinkn about using 1×1? might have produced a little more space inside the stand. I loved how you created a random pattern in the laser etching.

Kyle, good work with the final product, especially in light of the pivot you decided to pursue for a nightstand in lieu of the desk concept. The copper color of the screws do add to the hi-tech look of the PCB designs you etched on the surface of the exterior pieces. I am excited to see the real thing soon!

It was interesting to hear how you prototyped elements of your design to inform the technique you decided to use. It was also interesting to hear about some of the limitation posed to material choice in using the laser cutter. The technique of randomization in deleting lines on the cut design turned out great! With the hollow space below the drawer, perhaps you could create a hidden drawer that opens from the side. Great job overall!

  • I like how you kept the unstained aesthetics of your project. It goes well with your circuit board design. Seems like you spent a lot of time working to get this project completed well. Great job!

It was really cool to hear more about your design process. I’m not really familiar with laser cutting or etching, so it was interesting to hear how you came up with the design. Since there was warping in your wood after it was etched, how would you account for that in a future redesign? Overall, I think your project turned out really well, I think you hit your design aesthetic goal perfectly.

  • The night stand looks really good! Look like you put a lot of planning into your design, which probably helped add to the quality finished look. Super nice you were able to use the laser cutter, it probably made the manufacturing process much quicker. Would look a little better with the wood finished, but the project still looks like a total success! Good Job!

Seems like you spent so much time on this and it really shows. Do you plan on finishing and staining before expo?

I can see how you made it look like a circuit / breadboard with the laser etching, very cool! I agree that the copper nuts also add to the aesthetic. Very great job, I think that was a really cool idea!
