Top 5 Constraints

1.Usability

The ultimate goal for this project is the functionality and usability. I respect the ability for people to make things without functionality, but most things have some sort of functional purpose. Therefore, I need to make the product adaptable and useful. Depending on whether I have a head board later in life or decide to move into a smaller space I want to have something that I can always move around with me.

2. Aesthetics

The whole design is centered around a single night stand which seems pretty simplistic. However, I would like to try and break the mold of the minimalist aesthetic and blend in some texture and metal to change the minimalist aesthetic to something more.

3. Cost

Cost seems to be a big constraint with any project. However, with something made of wood, metal, and leather, this projects budget will have to be tightly monitored. It is incredibly easy to spend over $100 on a single type of wood.

Another thing that I have to be careful of are the integrated light fixtures. LED light fixtures alone can range from $30-100+. Therefore I haven’t given myself a fixed budget yet, but I will try to up-cycle and reuse things as much as possible.

4. Materials

I want this product to appeal to the senses in some way. The purpose of the leather aspect is to create ridges and a texture not found on wood. The bronze being used will create a very cool, relaxed sense. Every material in this product matters to me, which makes this a very big constraint.

5. Electronics

This product will either have a built in lamp or a hanging lamp, but will incorporate some sort of charging station. Due to the thickness of the wood, this may constrict where the charging pad can go which needs to be decided on before assembly.

This project seems really cool and I can’t wait to see it when it’s done! I think that for the wood you could maybe go to the Maker Space in the Idea Forge because they have some big pieces of scrap and the quality could be good enough for you to use. That could cut down on cost.

Hi Rachel! I love your idea to incorporate different textures with leather and wood because it not only looks more interesting, but it incorporates more of the user’s senses. I’m excited to see how it turns out.
