Post 7: Plans & Alternatives

For my main project, I’m planning on sticking with my spacecore aesthetic since I’ve gotten to know it well, I like it, and it would be fun to have a consistent aesthetic between my upcycle project and my main project.

My idea for my project is as seen below. There is a round disk as a base, then a thin shaft that goes up through the middle. At the top of the shaft, there are twelve wires hanging off: six at one length and six at a shorter length. Each set of six wires is fastened to a ring part way down the wire, with the longer wires connected to a large ring and the short wires connected to a small one. The remaining end of each wire will be connected to a small spheres which will serve as planets. Maybe some of them could be spaceships, UFOs, some other item that someone might find in space, or something completely random as long as it satisfies the aesthetic.

I have yet to determine the exact dimensions of each component, but I’m I know I want the entire artwork to be under ten inches in height and diameter. I also may end up connecting wires from the bottom of the shaft to the rings if my current design ends up being too flimsy. If that ends up happening, I should not have to change my design much. The plan is to be able to rotate each ring and watch the planets wobble back and forth. If I make sure my wire measurements and sphere weights are precise, all of the planets should wobble and oscillate in synchrony. This design is not set in stone, but it is what I have envisioned at the moment.

To accomplish the aesthetic beyond simply hanging planets up in a circle, I would paint the center shaft black and add white specks to serve as stars. The bottom disk would also be primarily black, but I will utilize the large amount of surface area to paint galaxies, nebulae, wormholes, and comments. I will use my own artistic judgement to see what I think will look best while satisfying the aesthetic principles.

My alternative idea is essentially the same structure, but using a natural aesthetic instead. The bottom plate would be covered in grass, bushes, little trees, flowers, mushrooms, etc. The shaft would be painted and textures as if it is a tree trunk. This part may be a bit difficult because of how fine and detailed my brush strokes will have to be. I have artistic vision, but not much artistic talent when it comes down to it, so if I go with this aesthetic, it will be quite a struggle. Instead of using planets, I will use leafy green scraggly balls. I may also do some birds here and there. The wires will either be replaced with twine, wrapped in plastic vines, or both. The plastic vines will surround the upper portion, and hang down from each ring. The goal is to make it look like a lush tree and nature scene.

Great work on your project plan! I think your Spacecore theme is a unique and exciting idea. I love how you plan to paint the center shaft black with white specks to represent stars, and I can already imagine how stunning that will look. The addition of galaxies, nebulae, wormholes, and comets on the bottom disk will definitely add to the overall aesthetic and make it more cohesive. Your alternative idea is also quite intriguing. The nature-inspired theme with trees, leaves, and birds is a great idea.

I like how you are going to tie the final project into the upcycling one. I can’t wait to see how you make each one of the planets, UFO’s, and wormholes.

Thanks Connor. It may end up being a little less detailed, but I’m hoping it will end up okay.

  • This is an awesome idea! I followed some of your other space-core posts and I love this aesthetic. The biggest question I have – will you include Pluto as one of your planets?

I appreciate the support! I probably wouldn’t have, but since you asked, yes I will include Pluto as a planet. He may be small but he deserves recognition.
