Design Preview Report: Double Pendulum

Aesthetic

For my double pendulum violin design, I want to make this with a pair of artistic styles that will complement each-other. I want to combine Arts & Crafts aesthetic with a Baroque antiquity aesthetic. Because the Arts & Crafts movement was inspired heavily by the Baroque this should not be too challenging. For this project I am going to give an arts and crafts feel through my use of materials and how I work with these materials.

As seen above, baroque and rococo patterns have a lot of swirly leafy designs. I wanted to add a few of these to the violin design as well as putting in vines with leaves to add in the baroque edge of the violin. As can be seen below, is the envisioned aesthetic. The vines with the leaves and flower buds are very indicative of the Baroque movement. At the base and the top are the swirly designs that are in almost all Baroque artwork. The space in the middle seemed very empty, so because I am moving soon and my girlfriends cats will not be joining us. Because of this, I want to have a tribute to them cause they are really sweet.

Materials 

I am going to be utilizing copper to show off my design aesthetic. This will be achieved by etching my drawn patterns into copper from drawings that I made. These patterns will cover the head and the body of the violin shape. I am waiting for my presentation to get feedback but I am currently thinking about outlining the etches so that they will be a little more pronounced. For the rest of the materials I will be using wood that I either buy from home depot or that I can grab at the ITLL. Finally I will cut out the shape and assemble the double pendulum using the bearings from the ITLL consumables closet and the wood shop.

Timeline

I will have sufficient time to be able to get the project finished. I have already completed the aesthetic copper piece because it was something new and I wanted to get it out of the way early in case any issues arose.

April 4 – April 12 – Finish the aesthetics copper design

April 13 – April 23 Create pendulum out of wood

April 24 – May 2 – Write final report and plan final presentations

I feel like this timeline gives me a lot of time comfortably get this project done while also being able to comfortably work on other schoolwork without making this project my sole priority.
