Electric Car Design – Cardboard Rally Car

ELECTRIC CAR DESIGN UNRULR POST HERE

OVERVIEW

In this project, we were tasked with making a 1:4 scale model of the front-end of a car out of cardboard. The catch: it had to look like an electric car. Our group based our design on a classic rally car. The two main ways we achieved looking electric were through a single headlight bar and a downdraft wing that visibly went through the front of the car where the engine should be.

CAD Model and 1:8 Prototype

After ideating, we made a CAD model that had the major design choices present. Then, to practice constructing out of cardboard, we made a low-fidelity 1:8 prototype so we could learn the best way to bend and affix cardboard.

Full-Scale Design

After learning the best ways to cut and bend the cardboard, we scaled up to a full-size design. The most difficult parts were getting the headlights to fit correctly and scoring the cardboard correctly to get the desired bends without destroying the cardboard or making it look too blocky. All in all, though, it was really fun to make a model like this out of cardboard, which was something I had never done before.
