For my project I have decided to make another iteration of my homemade Saxophone. I am going to try and make this much more similar to an actual saxophone than my upcycle version. However, a Saxophone is very complex with a lot of dynamic components.

Top 5 Constraints.

  1. Materials for springs and buttons
  2. Measuring the buttons and holes on actual Saxophones
  3. Drill bits available in the Wood Shop
  4. Time
  5. Making this airtight so that it actually plays

  • What material is the saxophone going to be composed of? Will it be a plastic or wood? If it is actually wood, that would lend to a great natural aesthetic. However assuming its plastic and similar to your upcycle design it will be interesting to see how it differs aesthetically. A dramatic/bright paint color could be entertaining as opposed to the sleek brass normally associated with saxophones.

    You’ve come up with a really ambitious idea! It wasn’t explicitly stated, but I’m assuming the aesthetic you’re going for is a kind of metal-wood ironic swap thing which is really interesting. I’m not sure how you’re going to manufacture parts with such flowing curvature with the resources we have on campus, or maybe you are not only going to change the saxophone material, but the shape as well? Anyways, I’m very interested to see the progress as its made.

    More detail about you constraints and your ideas of how to confront them would have been beneficial. Also you should consider your aesthetic as a constraint as well, not only should this guy physically function but it needs to function within an aesthetic.
