Upycle Final Report: Pop-up LEGO Book

I have been a LEGO fan since I was child. After experiencing various type of LEGO, IDEAS series becomes my favourite. LEGO® Ideas products have been inspired and voted for by LEGO fans. They include original concepts and sets inspired by films!

Recently I found there was a new IDAES product released to public – Pop-up Book Building Kit.

This first-ever buildable pop-up book made from LEGO bricks opens to reveal the famous scene of grandmother’s forest cottage featuring opening door, bed and kitchen area. Recreate the scene when Little Red Riding Hood meets the wolf or swap out grandmother’s cottage for the scene of the giant’s castle in the clouds.  I pick the Jack and beanstalk to imitate.

At beginning, I collect the lego component from my collections based the IDEAs instruction. Several siginificant dynamic parts were not available so the online request system was implymented.

Following is several picture about the assembling process.

The completed work looks like this:

Function goal: The objective of this work is for decoration. And reconstitution of previous LEGO collections.

Artistic goal: Ineterprate a fairy tale in an another way. The matched color is far beyond my expectation.

Future Plan: Based on the book frame, I’d like to put various story into book.

  • I think making things out of legos is really cool. If I had had enough at home I too would’ve tried a project like this. I’ve always enjoyed looking at lego creations and this popup book was a neat and interesting idea to do! Great job!

  • I really enjoyed how you turned something so simple such as Legos to create this masterpiece. I loved the aesthetic you have created and it’s very soothing as an art piece.

  • I really enjoy that you took something you can reuse over and over to make this project. The pop-up look was really cool as well, and I liked that it told a story.

I really liked how even though it was very simple, it was still able to maintain the essence of the story and clearly show what story it is telling. It would be really cool to use the techniques for the pop-up mechanism for other art pieces.

It is interesting that you made the whole project out of legos instead of mixing materials, which gives it a unique aspect that I really liked! I also enjoy that it is a dynamic project and seems to work well each time you open the book. I would be interested to see the whole process on how you made the pop-up element, but overall good job with the presentation!
