Main Project Inspirations – Kinetic Sculpture

Work by Alexander Calder

For my main project I’d like to make a kinetic sculpture, which would move when interacted with, but wouldn’t have much functionality beyond that. I’m not sure of the exact design at this point. I’m sure I’ll end up going through several iterations over the course of the rest of the semester.

Aesthetically, I’ll be emulating the look of Chinese New Year Festivals. In terms of process, I’ll be visiting several Chinese kitsch shops and picking up interesting components, which I will then base my sculpture design around.

This sounds cool and I think that this is a good way to incorporate the dynamic element of the project. The Chinese lantern is an iconic element of the Chinese New Year festivities which is really cool. Maybe you can also add some lesser known elements to the sculpture?

I think using this project as an opportunity to create a decoration or some artwork is a great idea. We are all college students after all and are usually lacking in home decoration. You are off to a great start knowing the aesthetic you are looking for. It would be cool of you could emulate floating lanterns using some sort of thin wire and a moving base. Very cool idea.
