Design Review: Two Lamps and A Clock

Inspirations

I was inspired by the following lamps as well as the modernist aesthetic in general for my projects(click images for source). I like the curves and simple materials in these lamps, and hope to emulate their feel with my lamps

.

I was also inspired by the following two minimalist/modernist clocks for my clock design

Vision

I am hoping to achieve a simple yet elegant form with my project. To accomplish this, I will be using a limited color palette of only two or three different wood types/stains. I will also use the same form for three parts of my two lamps, as seen below. I hope to have my wood stained dark and my light golden(possibly with an Edison bulb) or multicolor(with a Philips LED light). I am hoping through meticulous fabrication techniques to make the build quality look professional as well.

Sketches

Here you can see preliminary designs for my hanging and standing lamps. The foot and head of the floor lamp as well as the main body of the hanging lamp will all be identical- a 12″ truncated cone. These designs are not final but give a general idea of the form of my lamps.

This sketch is the template I will be using to lasercut my clock. The circle to the right will lay on the one to the left, and the right will be a darker stained wood. From there, all I need to do is add the clock mechanism and hands, which should be relatively straight forward.

As a Statement of Meaning live critique I said that I appreciated that Rhys is making multiple furnishings. By keeping his aesthetic consistent across all of them, he’ll really be able to saturate a room with that aesthetic!

    Rhys,
    Statements of meaning:
I liked your detailed CAD models.
I like how you are going to combine the aesthetic of dark wood combined with metal tubing.

Interesting focus on aesthetic vs. product type. I feel like this more directly relates to the goal of the class than most other projects, and your choice of aesthetics seems well thought out.

  • RGB lightbulbs are really fun and could make for a very interesting aesthetic choice, especially if you can get the two lamps to synch up together.

I like the fact that you are planning on complimenting dark wood with an Edison bulb!
Think using a lathe for this project is ambitious, but I am very excited to see how it turns out.
