Admired Designer – Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry is a Canadian American architect and designer born February 28, 1929 in Toronto Canada. Frank Gehry designs architecture that free form sculptures that goes against typical architectural design. He is famous for designing buildings such as the Vitra Furniture Museum and Factory in Germany, the American Center in Paris, and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. His architectural designs include many large curves and wavy shapes combined with boxy geometry. These designs are also prevalent in his house in Santa Monica, California He also incorporates different materials across his work such as titanium, steel, colorful sheet metal and limestone. Many of his drawings and sculptures have been showcased in major museums across the globe. He has also received numerous rewards for his work.

I personally like the non-conventional aspects of his architecture and his creative use of basic geometry. Many of his buildings appear to almost curve into themselves. I also admire his creativity with the materials he uses, especially metal and how he incorporates the reflectiveness into his designs. The designs feel futuristic and almost alien like and certainly draw the eye of the observer. I strive to think outside the box with the way he uses material in creative forms and incorporate that thinking into the aesthetics in my future designs as an engineer.

Hi Grant, these buildings are insane! I love how he incorporates so much texture into his work! Not only are these building visually stunning, im sure they’re marvels of structural engineering as well. Do you have a favorite building?

This architecture is incredible. The first and last images look much more like sculptures than buildings. I really like how the last building resembles large ribbons flowing in the wind. I also admire the shapes and colors he uses. It definitely makes the structures look more interesting and fun when compared to buildings that are linear and sleek in design. I’m also getting some heavy Dr. Seuss vibes from the American Center in Paris! Great post!
