For my pirate shelf I used Ipe and woodburned in details like the wood paneling and the pirate symbols.
This project was quite difficult because Ipe is incredibly hard and dense and broke all of the tools I used on it.
Because of this most of the detail work was done with woodburing to add the depth and look of being multiple pieces of wood.
