For the final project, I decided to start a larger project of making stained glass inspired wings for the Renaissance Festival by making one trial wing. I first started by sketching what I wanted the pattern to look like. Then, because I knew how to use sketch relations and knew I could get a dxf file out of it, I imported my drawing into SolidWorks and traced over the drawing with a SolidWorks sketch. I then exported the SolidWorks sketch to a dxf file and took it to the laser cutters. I cut out a paper pattern using a big piece of butcher paper from the ITLL, the dxf file, and the ITLL laser cutters, and honestly it worked out better than I could have hoped.

I then cut out fabric with my laser cut pattern pieces. I really wanted to do this with a method of sewing called pojagi, which is a way to put together two pieces of fabric with fully enclosed seams. After making one wing, I’ve realized that the pattern I created was not the best designed for the technique. I still like the technique and the effect it creates, but I will be taking another look at this project over the summer to make new wings before the Renaissance Festival.
