Final Projects

I will be making a Victorian style metal wallet (think similar to a Ridge wallet), possibly including leather accents for pockets as well.

The referenced aesthetic: Victroian-era metalwork art and appliances, specifically focusing on the ‘hammered/hand-shaped metal’ look of them (PS other aesthetics also have this but I found that the prominant one is Victorian)

A list of 3 or more characteristics you will borrow or adapt from your chosen aesthetic, and how you will do that.
– Hammered metal as the exterior of the wallet
– A mix of colored metals (i.e. brass and silver) in either straight or curled patterns
– Accents of warm, muted colors

My first run of laying the hammered texture dime didn’t turn out too well, eventually did get it to a consistency that I was pretty happy with (alternating between 3 and 4 dimes on top of one another, since I couldn’t backtrack to fix any previous lines). I also added a layer of psudo-clear-coat with a clear gloss varnish to keep any scratches from ruining the texture.
The actually folding portion was difficult since I couldn’t find any fasteners small enough to mount 2 smaller hinge, leaving me to settle for just one thicker one. That did allow me more space to have exterior leather at the joint though so I tried adding an elastic element to it, as well as leather trim all around the edges for “comfort” so it’s not just bare metal as the edges.
That worked for a while but the entire thing tore off since it bonded to the clear coat rather than the metal :/ I ended up cutting my losses and just added leather to the joint and pockets inside.
Overall, I’m slightly disappointed it’s not as polished of a product as I would’ve liked (since I chose not that large of a project for that purpose), but I’m very happy with how the finishing on the outside turned out, as well as how sturdy and durable it unexpectedly is. 🙂
