Cassette Art Progress

For my upcycling project I have chosen to take old cassette tapes and place them onto a foam core board to create an image (example shown below).

My design might not be as intricate as the one pictured above, but I hope to try to make my design using one continuous line of tape. I have noticed that in many designs on the internet, the image made by the cassette tape is created by cutting the tape into segments to break the image (demonstrated by the break in one of the shoulders pictured above). I want my image to flow continuously on the background. I have not settled on a specific image yet, but I greatly enjoy play on words and hope to find a way to incorporate that idea into my work.

A second idea I had which may either be abandoned, incorporated into the above idea, or replace the above idea (depending on how well my image can be manipulated) is to make art from paperclips. These can either be small sculptures from things that inspire me throughout the design process, or made to in some way incorporate a play on words.

I think this is a really cool concept, and you can really do a lot with it. Have you thought about using different forms of music players for different eras of music? Perhaps CD records or old mp3 players are old enough now to be incorporated into your project.

I really like this idea and I love the music aspect. I think you could do some really neat things with this. Have you thought of creating an image that has meaning tied back to how no one really uses cassettes anymore? I think this could turn out really awesome and you are creating some awesome art here!

  • It would certainly be nice if you incorporate more than one element to your project. Sometimes I personally prefer playing with one element only. It makes art look cleaner and simpler (that’s just me). Keep it up and Good luck!
