Brittany Warly-Project Inspirations

I knew from the beginning of the semester that I wanted to make a mobile. In case you didn’t know what a mobile is exactly, a mobile is an device which typically hangs from the ceiling in a nursery and has objects balancing from all sides of it to hold the device in equilibrium. The most difficult aspect to this project is being able to set the objects into equilibrium with eachother so the mobile can balance perfectly in space. As an engineer, we mostly deal with electrical and mechanical devices, and I don’t get to play with my artistic side as often. What is driving me in this project is my excitement and motivation to finally get to put my artistic abilities to use. I will be graduating this may, and moving into a new city, Colorado Springs. The walls in my room will be bare, empty, and emotionless upon moving there. For the first time in a long time, I will have a place I can call home (a temporary permanent home :)) What I would like to do is make this place as comfortable, welcoming, and as positive as possible. I have always liked the way mobiles look, and their free-floating nature creates a sense of calmness to me. My bedroom growing up was covered in glow-in the dark starts on the ceiling. I have always loved the night sky, astronomy, and nature. My dad and I used to always go lay in the backyard at nighttime, watch the stars, and he would teach me all about the stars and planets. This is why I could love to incorporate stars somehow into my mobile. I have a few ideas: I may use glow in the dark stars and gems and make an intricate design. I have also decided to use a circular base instead of a layered mobile to create more symmetry. I may either spray paint the circular base with a glow in the dark paint or implement LEDs on it so I can switch them on and off. Another idea I had was to use flowers because I love flowers as well and I feel that they would also create a positive vibe in my room.

I like the sunflowers and natural outside look on this reef. This is something I was thinking of doing to the base of my mobile

I like the LEDs implemented with the flowers and the calm white color provides a peaceful aesthetic. This is another possibility.

It is interesting to read your initial inspiration knowing how your project turned out at the end of the semester. Your initial desire to use LEDs, turned your final product into a deep sea jelly fish. It was fun to watch your project progress throughout the semester.

  • A mobile is a worthy goal. What I love about mobiles is the use of balancing elements, often asymmetric; that makes them seem like floating magic, moving even in the faintest indoor breeze. Does the one in your photo move much? Maybe if it is for outdoors, where the wind will move it. Will you go for a super-realistic hanging jungle, or a more elegant, abstract hint of floral?

I’m pretty excited to see what direction your mobile takes! I considered using a mobile “motor” for a project once; they’re really cheap if you think you might want to add some rotation to your project. Combining your astronomy ideas with your floral ones may make for a really cool product!

  • I definitely love the second photo as an inspiration to a mobile! I know you were also considering the optic fiber glass chandelier – you could combine the flowers with it similar to your second photo, so instead of just clear beads, you could add flowers through out it! I’m excited to see what idea you decide on!
