20th Century Design Influence

Early in my design studies, I was a die-hard modernist- bowing to the mighty power of grids and minimalism. I could have practically tattooed a big Helvetica “form follows function” on my forehead at that point. And although this aesthetic still figures heavily into the final project that I’m working on for this class, it’s far from my guiding light. In addition to studying design over the past 10 years, I also became very interested in environmental issues, and this started to figure heavily into my artwork as well. The chaotic, layered organic forms that permeated some post-modern art and design work were also influential for me, and I find that I can comfortably call my self a child of post-modernism, in that I believe that emotion and feeling can be equally important in guiding my choices.

As for my update:

I’ve cut a lot of branches,

I’ve made a lot of designs in Rhino,

And I have a lot of woodworking to do this week. I’m burning more wood paneling for the outside of the box and installing the IR sensors in the boards. Wish me luck.

I too like minimalism, but I’m still a bit stuck with the more modern aesthetic that it seems you have moved past. Sounds like your project is getting under way. How do you plan on the light interacting? It seems that you have the systems figured out, I just don’t quite understand what the light does as you walk past. However, seeing your previous work it seems you have a solid grasp on your style and will be making a true work of art for this production.

I am a personal fan of the minimalist movement and enjoy organic designs that fit well into a space. I think the combination of those movements creates a very eye drawing piece. What have you done to combined these? Will you being using the natural wood or painting it? I would love to see pictures of your progress and designs in Rhino.
