Design Review/Prototype: Tori Herfert

Background if you have not read my other posts: I will be making a lazy susan for my dining room table.  I have decided to do this because I wanted to create something that would be useful and I could take home with me after the completion of this project.

The main aesthetic I am going for is the deutscher werkbund aesthetic we learned about in class.  I like this aesthetic because it is very clean cut and simple and this is what I would like my final product to look like.

For my prototype, I decided to design a couple different ways that I want my wood to be carved out aesthetically.  I was thinking about keeping it flat, but I cannot decide if I should go through with this or not.

My Ideas:

  • Keep the top of the lazy susan flat
  • Carve out a round center
  • Curved top

The reason I would like to keep it flat, is because I feel like the different carvings on the wood could keep it from its full capacity of holding things.

The carve out round center would be to look aesthetically pleasing.  It is important to make it look aesthetically different and fun which is why I am considering doing this.

Prototype: Carved out Center

The next style I thought about was an elevated curve.  I would also do this to make it aesthetically pleasing.  I have to decide what I like best, but now that I have these different wood options, I can pick one to go with and stain it.

Prototype: Elevated Curve Surface

This prototype portion of the project has helped me think lots about what I want the final product to look like.  I know for sure that the wood must be dark, but that is all.

I love this idea. Growing up in the southern United States, everyone had lazy susans on their dining room tables. These are very functional pieces of furniture, but if they are made well, they are actually beautiful pieces of furniture as well. Adding flowers like you discussed would be a fairly easy way to add a huge amount of detail to this project. Nicely done!

I like the idea and that fact that it will be functional/you’ll actually use it. I like how you’re bringing in aspects from your upcylce project into the aesthetic of the product. I think laser etching is definitely your best bet for getting the design onto what you build.

Very fun idea! My parents own a lazy susan-like device with a granite top that we love. I like that you are planning to make yours out of wood that you plan to stain yourself. Very thoughtful discussion on how you came up with the project idea and constraints, and how you plan to finish the product for the final design. Great job!

Tori, it sounds like you have a clear functional goal and have some solid design options to pursue with the base components you have already fabricated. You may be able to draw aesthetics or fabrication methods from other products and project, so keep your eyes peeled if you are still unsure what aesthetic you want to promote. I’m excited to how it all pans out in the coming weeks.

Your idea is great! You have a lot of options for adding great aesthetics to it. I like your idea of adding flowers into the design of it. Have you thought about adding them to the edge to hide the turntable? Like I mentioned in class McMaster has a bunch of turntables for sale.

I think your project sounds really need and has a lot of potential aesthetics that can be added to it! Someone mentioned that you could laser cut the flowers into the wood and I think that sounds like a really cool idea. You could also add frills to the ends of the wood so when you spun it they flew up which could be fun! Overall, great project! Good Luck!

  • This is a really interesting project. I have a lazy susan table at home as well. As for creating flower designs, you could use the laser cutter to etch flowers onto the wood before staining it. Can’t wait to see the outcome.

  • This is a really cool idea for a project! I can definitely see how it would be something you can use everyday, and something like that would be really helpful around the house. Good luck with the building process, I hope it turns out well!
