One of the first elements of the project that I considered during the design process was material. It is an up-cycle project after all and the main idea here is to create art out of recycle or old materials. For this reason, one of my first instincts was to think about aluminum cans because they are everywhere in the world and it is extremely versatile material. I then performed some research on aluminum can art projects and found the following projects.
The projects above were extremely inspirational, however, they were bit too complicated and intricate for my level of skill. Therefore, I continued researching for ideas closer to my skill level and I found flowers made of aluminum cans. These were simple yet elegant designs that really solidified my choice for my project. It’s really impressive project not only in the aesthetics way but also in the sustainability part. You can ask Mo in ITLL for handling complex geometry as the elephant in you post.
This a really cool use of an object that we are interacting with every day, and how it can bring out the beauty of something as simple as a can. If you are going with the flower approach, was there any specific flower that you had in mind? Also as this will require pieces from the can, have you thought about how you are planning on cutting the pieces? Using different tools to create your smaller pieces might result in different kinds of edges that could be another thing that could add to your creation.
Wow! There are some very cool projects made with aluminum cans. It is almost a whole new medium of sculpture. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I hope it all works out well and I hope you don’t cut yourself on the cans. Do you plan on using the color of the cans in their original form to aid in your concept like the images show here? Or will you paint over the branding and colors that come with the original material? As for critique on the post, I would be cautious about utilizing images straight from pinterest. Maybe you can follow the line of posters to an original image creator as I understand pinterest to be a site used for sharing ideas by those who have not always created the idea they post. This is more of a thought on your blog rather than your project but I do think that it will help you when it comes to the instructor’s response to your next posts. Either way, the project really cool and I hope you figure something out that is even cooler. Good luck!
