My Personal Aesthetic

I would probably describe my personal aesthetic as that of a working tourist. I’m the type of person that when there isn’t anything to do I tend to lose my mind a little bit, but on the flip side I also really enjoy taking time off to travel and see different parts of the world.

Part of the reason that I chose an engineering major is the academic stimulation that comes with it. I have always pushed myself throughout my academic career to try my best and learn new things. It’s also part of the reason I didn’t really enjoy summer break as a kid. I would be okay for a few weeks and then get bored and miss school. When I got older I was able to fill the months with a job, which helped, but school has always been my main passion. Traveling is also something that is a big part of my aesthetic. I love traveling to new places and seeing new things. This was definitely inspired by growing up in a military family and moving around every few years. As a result I’ve been to a dozen and a half countries and it feels weird whenever I stay in one place for more than a few years. I’ve already accepted a contract to work for the military after graduation working with nuclear reactors and I big part of the reason I took the offer was so that I would be able to travel around the world for a few years on somebody else’s dime.

My project will stick within my own personal aesthetic. I tend to pick up new hobbies whenever I’m feeling bored and one of these hobbies has been chess. I picked up chess at the start of quarantine as a way to just fill the time and learn something new. I really enjoy the game so I am going to be combining my passion for that with some of the more technical skills I’ve learned through engineering to create a custom and unique board.

  • I like how you get bored and pick up a new skill to learn. I think I have a similar attitude but I probably have a higher tolerance to boredom which is the reason I take up new task after a lot of procrastination. I too took up Chess about a month ago and I play on chess.com. I like the idea of making a custom board for chess, probably something that can sense the moves of a player and start/stop a on-board timer. I am not sure if you are thinking about a similar idea but I am curious to see how your final product comes out.

  • Hi Callum,

It interesting to see that you picked up chess recently and that you plan to make it apart of your final project. What made you get into chess and what do you imagine making your final project look like/do?

      Hey Josh,

When the pandemic first started I initially got into poker, but then I got in trouble for gambling. The military and my mother were concerned I “had a problem” so I was forced to stop. I picked up chess quickly afterwards because it was a relatively easy and inexpensive way to pass the time. My plan for my final project is to construct the board out of wood with layers underneath for both the pieces and the lights. I’m still working out some of the details of it.
